frequently asked questions

Do you need special certification to rent a sailboat?

No, but you do need sufficient prior sailing experience in order to rent a sailboat on your own. However, we offer sailing instruction for those who have no sailing experience, and generally after one or two lessons (at the instructor’s discretion) you are able to rent a sailboat on your own.

Can I take my rentals offsite?

Yes. We supply straps and foam blocks to that customers can take kayaks and canoes offsite as long as they are properly and safely stored overnight. Daily rentals are valid for 24h from the time of the rental.

Do we have to bring our own lifejacket? Are they mandatory?

Lifejackets and all mandatory safety equipment is supplied by us and are included in the rentals. It is not mandatory to wear a lifejacket but it is mandatory to have a lifejacket with you. Although we recommend that customers wear their lifejackets at all times.

Can I take my phone and keys with me while out on the water?

You can but we recommend not to, as they are valuable to you and would very inconvenient should they fall out of the boat.  We offer a free service to leave them behind at our shop.

When does the rental time start?

If you made a reservation, the time starts from the time you indicated, so if you are late, you will still have to pay from your requested start time, so plan on arriving a few minutes beforehand.  If you walk in, then the time starts from when we put you in the boat.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Not necessarily, but if you are coming to Kingston from out of town and want to ensure you have a boat or bike then you can do it by calling or using the online reservation form.  For Bikes, Canoes, Kayaks or SUP that you will be using right from our location, you do not need a credit card.  We will hold this for 15 mins after the time you requested.  If you choose to use a credit card, we will hold this for as long as you want, however the rental time will start from the time you reserved, not from when you show up.  If you do not show up, you will have to pay for the entire rental fee.

The following items require a reservation:
Skippered Sailing Charters
Paddling and Sailing Instruction
SUP & Yoga
Daily and Weekly Canoe/Kayak/SUP Rentals
Full Day Sailing Rentals

Is there parking nearby?

Yes, the park in which we are located has ample parking.  The fee is $1 per hour Mon-Fri from 8am to 5pm and FREE on weekends.

What form of payment is accepted?

Debit, Visa, Mastercard and cash.

What should I bring?

Towel (although we have a few available, free of charge)
Wet shoes, or any other footwear that can get wet.  You can go bearfoot and leave your shoes behind.
Bathing suit
Watch
Sun block

Can I return the bike after hours?

Yes, if you think you will be gone for the whole day, you can prepay for the full day, we will give you a lock and you can lock the bike and drop the key in the drop box.

What if I am not familiar with rigging the sailboat?

We rig and launch all sailboats, however you are responsible for safely landing the boat, dropping sails and hauling the boat back to the rental office on the dolly provided.

Can I go paddling anywhere I like?

Generally we discourage customers from paddling across to Wolfe Island, for the simple reason that the winds tend to increase as the day goes on and you will have the waves hitting the side of your boat which is unsafe. We recommend going along the shore.

What happens if I overturn my canoe or kayak?

If you can see our building, we can see you, so if we spot you, we will come out on our safety boat. If you can’t see us, we can’t see you and therefore will be unable to know that you are in trouble. This is why we ask you to stay close to shore, unless you are confident in your ability.
